Reminder: New York State Minimum Wage To Increase In 2024

Beginning on January 1, 2027, increases to the minimum wage rates will be based on inflation using a three-year average of the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (“CPI-W”).  The State labor commissioner is directed to publish the adjusted minimum wage rate no later than October 1st each year, with the new rates taking effect the following January 1st. New York Governor Hochul Vetoes Bill That Would Ban Non-Compete Agreements

On November 30, 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would not be signing proposed legislation that would prohibit employee non-compete agreements in New York.

As we previously reported, on June 7, 2023, the New York State Senate passed Bill No. S03100 (the “Bill”), which would amend the New York Labor Law to ban the use of non-compete agreements between employers and employees. Read more.

New York State Extends Statute Of Limitations For Unlawful Discriminatory Practices To Three Years

On November 17, 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that extends the statute of limitations for claims resulting from unlawful discriminatory practices from one to three years.  As you may recall, starting on August 12, 2020, the statute of limitations for filing a sexual harassment complaint in New York State was extended from one year to three years. This new law will now include all unlawful discriminatory practices in the three year limitation period for filing claims. Read more.
